Babies are most easily photographed within two weeks of birth. During this time, babies sleep most of the day and are quite difficult to wake up. This makes positioning those tiny hands and feet simple, and light from the flash will not disturb those precious eyes. Also most skin blemishes on new babies do not show up until after two weeks. If the baby is older, make sure to work around the nap schedule. Tired and cranky babies make taking pictures stressful and difficult for everyone involved.
The same subject captured from different angles creates different pictures. Standing three feet
over a baby to snap a shot might not produce awe-inspiring results of a certain pose, but a picture taken of the same pose level with the baby, could better enhance its tiny features. Checking multiple angles will ensure each picture is taken with the best possible quality. Use props to establish scale reference. A picture featuring only a baby will not sufficiently show its size. Placing the child in a basket, by a stuffed animal or snuggled in an adult’s hands helps portray how tiny a newborn is or how big a 7-month-old is becoming.
